Commercial hunters
Many hundreds of thousands of South American sea lions were killed by commercial hunters in the 19th and 20th centuries, some until as late as the 1950s, and several populations were heavily depleted as a result. There is currently no commercial hunting of the species within its range, although pressure exists in several countries to resume such hunting.
