Firmly in place

After being cut, the post are brought back to the village and placed in holes in the ground, prior to decoration. Once firmly in place, the Kuarup post are ready to be painted. Beginning about a foot or so down fromthe top, an area of the post about 16 inches wide is stripped of its bark, and this surface is painted with a geometric design executed in black and white.
