Floating gardens
Without any land to cultivate, the Intha have devised an ingenious method for making their own. To create a garden, they build a mat from the reeds that grow around the lake. Mud from the lake's floor is piled on top and mixed with the hyacinth weed for fertilisation. The new garden is then anchored to the lake's floor using long bamboo stakes.
