Nagaland is a mountainous state in northeast India, bordering Myanmar. Nagaland became the 16th state of India on December 1st of 1963. The state has experienced insurgency, as well as an inter-ethnic conflict, since the 1950s. The violence and insecurity have limited Nagaland's economic development.
The Naga, a group of tribes for whom the ancient customs of headhunting, giant log drum making, and spiritual healing are still a way of life, are found in the remote hills of northeast India. Nagaland has been closed to outsiders for a long time, accessible only to those with special permits.
