The Hamer tribe or Hamar live in the Hamer Bena Woreda District of the Omo River Valley in southwestern Ethiopia. The Hamer are primarily pastoralists, tending cattle. Officially the Hamer tribe is Muslim. However, in practice they are animists, believing that plants, animals, and even inanimate objects have spirits that can supernatural powers over human beings. Hair grooming is paramount to the Hamar concept of beauty. Women roll their locks with animal fat and red ochre (assile) and then twist them into crimson-coloured dreds called goscha, a style that the men find attractive.
